The Mercantour National Park is just a few steps away from the Rioclar campsite in Barcelonnette. The Mercantour is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers.
It is particularly well known for being one of the wildest of France, and one of the most diverse in terms of landscapes. It has 600 km of well maintained and marked trails, including the GR 5, and GR 52A which forms the most scenic trail of the Mercantour Park.
The Allos Lake on the Ubaye side is 2,220 m high. It is overlooked by the Pelat Mount (3052 meters) and it is the largest natural altitude lake of Europe. It covers 60 ha and is about 50 m deep.
The pass of la Bonnette Restefond, a link between the “Vallée de la Tinée” (Alpes-Maritimes) and the “Vallée de l’Ubaye” (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence), offers a sumptuous panorama, notably of the peaks of the Ubaye, Ecrins and Pelvoux, but also of the Italian mountains with Mont Viso…
Not to be missed:
Because of the diversity of grounds and climates (Alpine and Mediterranean), the park has over 2000 species of plants. Deer, chamois (8000 individuals), ibex (1100), mountain sheep (mouflon), deer, lynx and wild boars thrive.
Bearded vultures, golden eagles and black grouses are also present. Why would’nt you go for a hike with one of our mid-mountain guides for discovering this magnificent place? Family excursions are organized by our Campsite at special rates.
